ePortfolios
Gayle Britt

"Studying one's own learning process...can be a powerful method of enhancing learning." -Seymour Papert

Definition of ePortfolio: In summary, an eportfolio is a digital collection of artifacts that demonstrate student achievement toward the standards. The included artifacts cannot prove attainment of knowledge, but can be indicators of competence.

Students are required to organize information, probe content in depth, problem-solve, communicate orally and in writing, and dialogue with an audience deepening their understanding.

Purpose/Rationale:

Two important reasons for doing eportfolios:
1. For the student: Students practice metacognition learning how to learn and taking responsibility for their learning.
2. For the teacher: Students reveal their understandings or misunderstandings so the teacher can adjust instruction. (Example: Leo Lionni 's book Fish is Fish)

Tools - Criteria
Some questions for consideration:
1. What software applications are available and are familiar to the students?
2. Will the software allow sound, images, movies, animations, and links to web sites?
3. How will the eportfolio be saved and given to students? CDs? Published on web?
4. How will students' work be saved throughout the year to expedite the process? Do they have server storage accounts?
